Abandoned as a baby, Tom Jones is adopted by a wealthy and compassionate widower, Squire Allworthy. Tom's childhood affection for Sophia Weston, a local landowner's daughter, slowly deepens into love. But Sophia is meant to marry the malevolent Blifil, who plots against Tom and gets him banished.
