On 27 September 1900, 19-year-old Pablo Picasso arrives in Paris and spends half a century there, changing his address and atelier several times, beginning with the Bateau-Lavoir in Montmartre and finally to the Grands-Augustins attic in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. From Les Demoiselles d’Avignon to Guernica, it is on the embankments of the Seine that the painter’s genius bursts forth and unfolds.
To follow Picasso around Paris is to wander through the popular districts where artists lived and worked, to push open the doors of the gallery owners and engravers, to visit the ateliers of his friends, to enjoy the pleasures of the circus, the theatre, the cinema and smoke-filled bars… or to watch for the light in the window of Fernande, Eva, Olga, Dora or Françoise.
